When Food Isn't Just Food: A Story About Eggs, Yeast, and a Very Hyper Child

Sometimes the answers we’re looking for aren’t obvious. Especially since I promote protein for breakfast - eggs on toast usually, but this may be the culprit all along!!
A while ago, I worked with a child who was constantly on the go - fidgety, restless, emotionally up and down. His parents described him as “wired but tired.” He was bright, curious, and full of potential… but something just wasn’t quite right.
Through a simple intolerance test, we discovered something interesting: his body was reacting to eggs and yeast.
Now, these are foods many of us eat daily. So how could they be causing such a big shift in his behaviour?
Not All Intolerances Show Up in the Gut
When people hear “food intolerance,” they usually think of bloating or stomach pain. But in children- especially those who are neurodivergent or sensitive - intolerances can show up as:
Hyperactivity
Emotional outbursts
Poor concentration
Sleep disturbances
Sensory overwhelm
In this little boy’s case, his reactions weren’t digestive. They were neurological. His system was so overloaded that even small things could tip him into a state of dysregulation.
Digging Deeper: What Was Behind the Intolerance?
Using kinesiology (a gentle muscle testing technique), we asked his body what it really needed. The answer was this:
👉 His adrenals were under strain.👉 His nervous system was stuck in a stress response.👉 His body couldn’t tolerate certain foods because it was simply overloaded.
Once we identified this, we supported his system with a tailored homeopathic remedy - one that helped detox and rebalance his adrenal function.
And Then Something Shifted…
After a short period of supporting his adrenals and reducing inflammatory load, we re-tested. His body no longer reacted to eggs and yeast. The foods themselves weren’t the root problem - they were just too much for a body that was already struggling.
And that’s so often the case.
What This Taught Me (and Hopefully You)
Sometimes a food intolerance is just that. But often, it’s a sign of something deeper - a nervous system under strain, a gut that needs support, or a child asking for help in the only way their body knows how.
When we listen carefully, the body always gives us clues.
And with the right tools - whether it’s kinesiology, nutrition, homeopathy or movement - we can support children to feel more settled, more connected, and more like themselves.
If you’ve ever felt like your child is constantly running on empty - or running at full speed without brakes -it might be time to look beneath the surface. Food might be part of the picture. But it’s not the whole story.
You’re not alone in this. And help is always possible.
