Why Bright Children Struggle With Reading Despite Being Intelligent

One of the most common things parents say to me is:

"I know my child is bright, so why are they struggling so much with reading?"

It can be incredibly frustrating to watch a child who is curious, imaginative, knowledgeable, and capable in so many areas suddenly seem to fall behind when it comes to reading.

Often these children can talk confidently about complex subjects, build incredible Lego creations, remember fascinating facts, solve problems creatively, and hold conversations well beyond their years.

Yet when faced with a page of text, everything seems to become difficult.

The important thing to understand is that intelligence and reading ability are not the same thing.

A child can be highly intelligent and still struggle with the underlying skills that make reading easy and automatic.


Reading Is More Than Intelligence

Reading is actually a highly complex neurological process.

For a child to read comfortably, many different systems within the brain and body need to work together efficiently. These include:

  • Eye tracking

  • Visual processing

  • Auditory processing

  • Coordination between the two sides of the brain

  • Attention and concentration

  • Working memory

  • Postural stability

  • Motor planning

  • Emotional regulation

If one or more of these areas is not functioning optimally, reading can become hard work, regardless of how intelligent the child may be.


When The Eyes Cannot Work Efficiently

One area that is often overlooked is eye movement.

Many children who struggle with reading have difficulty smoothly tracking across a line of text. Their eyes may skip words, lose their place, jump lines, or become tired quickly.

Parents often tell me:

  • "He keeps missing words."

  • "She reads the same line twice."

  • "He says reading gives him a headache."

  • "She can read one day but not the next."

These difficulties are not necessarily caused by poor eyesight. In many cases, the eyes themselves are healthy, but the neurological control of the eye movements is not fully developed.


The Role of Retained Primitive Reflexes

Another hidden factor can be retained primitive reflexes.

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that should naturally develop and integrate during infancy. When some remain active beyond the first year of life, they can interfere with learning, concentration, coordination, and reading.


For example:

ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex)

When retained, ATNR can affect:

  • Eye tracking across a page

  • Crossing the midline

  • Handwriting

  • Reading fluency

  • Coordination between the left and right sides of the body


STNR (Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex)

When retained, STNR can contribute to:

  • Poor posture when sitting

  • Difficulty focusing at a desk

  • Visual accommodation difficulties

  • Restlessness during schoolwork


Moro Reflex

The Moro reflex is the body's early stress response.

When retained, children may become:

  • Easily overwhelmed

  • Hypervigilant

  • Distracted by noise

  • Anxious about making mistakes

  • Mentally exhausted from concentrating


A child who is constantly operating in a heightened stress response will often find learning much harder than it needs to be.


Auditory Processing Difficulties

Some children hear perfectly well, yet their brains struggle to process what they hear accurately.

This can affect:

  • Phonics

  • Sound discrimination

  • Following instructions

  • Spelling

  • Reading comprehension

Parents may notice that their child frequently says:

"What?"

even though hearing tests come back normal.

The issue is often not hearing, but processing.


Could Nutrition Be Playing A Role?

Nutritional imbalances can also affect how efficiently the brain functions.

In my clinic I frequently see children who are naturally deficient in certain vitamins, minerals, or nutrients that support:

  • Concentration

  • Memory

  • Processing speed

  • Energy production

  • Nervous system function

When the body is lacking key nutrients, the brain may simply have to work harder.

Similarly, gut health can play an important role. The gut and brain are closely connected, and imbalances in beneficial bacteria can sometimes affect mood, attention, behaviour, and learning capacity.


Looking Beyond The Label

Many children who struggle with reading are eventually given labels such as dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, or sensory processing difficulties.

While labels can be helpful in explaining what is happening and accessing support, they do not always explain why a child is struggling.

The real question is:


What is making reading difficult for this particular child?

Every child is different.

For one child, the challenge may be retained reflexes.

For another, it may be visual processing.

For another, it may be auditory processing, nutritional deficiencies, stress, or a combination of factors.


Finding The Missing Piece

When we begin to look at the whole child rather than focusing solely on the reading difficulty, we often uncover hidden obstacles that have been affecting learning for years.

Once those underlying challenges are identified and supported, many parents report improvements not only in reading, but also in:

  • Confidence

  • Concentration

  • Emotional regulation

  • Handwriting

  • Processing speed

  • School engagement

  • Self-esteem


Because often the problem is not that the child isn't intelligent.

The problem is that something is getting in the way of their intelligence being fully expressed.

Could There Be An Underlying Block?

If your child is bright, capable, and intelligent but continues to struggle with reading, it may be worth looking beyond the symptoms and exploring what might be happening underneath.

Sometimes the answer isn't more practice.

Sometimes the answer is finding and addressing the hidden block that has been there all along.
